Get That Fresh Laundry Smell

Ever wonder how to get your clothes to smell just like they do when you visit grandmas house for the week. If you live in an area with hard artesian well water, getting laundry truly clean and fresh smelling can be a highly frustrating challenge. The minerals in hard water bind to fabrics, trapping old odors, body oils, and detergent film.

Many people spend months trying premium brands to fix the issue. I personally did extensive testing with Tide regular liquid, Tide powder, and Tide Hygienic Clean. I was thoroughly disappointed on all aspects regarding cleanliness, scent, and the feel of the fabrics after using all three products. I even tried Ariel, which is highly rated, but it left blue streaks on certain items due to its dark color, and the clothes still did not smell very good. My clothes were not filthy or in need of aggressive stripping; they just needed to be washed with a detergent capable of pulling out the old film and odors.

The Ultimate Detergent Mixture

After extensive research and trial and error, I found the absolute best solution. The secret to perfectly fresh laundry is not buying the most expensive brand. It is about using the right combination of ingredients to cut through grease and soften the hard water.

The winning formula is a mixture of Foca and Roma laundry detergents. This combination is the key. Foca contains essential enzymes and built-in water softeners that beautifully combat the hard artesian well water. Roma does not have enzymes, but it is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to cutting through grease, food stains, and deeply trapped body oils. This is especially important for thick cotton items like sheets and towels, which tend to hold onto body oils and smell dirty again just a day after washing.

The Step by Step Process

Start by adding a quarter cup of Foca to the bottom of your washing machine tub. Next, add a quarter cup to a half cup of Roma. Use the full half cup if you are washing a heavy load of sheets and towels that require extra grease-cutting power.

Run hot water over the powder in the bottom of the tub and let it sit for a couple of minutes to ensure the detergents fully dissolve. Next, add your load of laundry and fill the tub completely with hot water.

This next step is crucial. Let the clothes soak in the hot, soapy water for one full hour. After the soak is complete, run the machine through a full, long cycle with an extra rinse.

The Right Way to Dry

When it is time to put everything in the dryer, only run the machine until the dampness is just gone. Over-drying bakes in lingering odors and ruins the fresh scent.

When it comes to dryer sheets, keep it simple. Toss in a standard, original Bounce dryer sheet. In my testing, Downy dryer sheets were completely overpowering and actually made the clothes smell dirty. Unscented sheets did nothing but prevent static cling. The original Bounce sheets provide that perfect, clean finish.

This simple method will pull out old odors, break down heavy oils, and leave you with pure, comforting, grandma-approved freshness every single time.
